Props and costume

Today i ordered my props and costume for our final title sequence, as a group we split all the props and costumes into sections so it was fairly divided and everything has been ordered intime for the shoot.

Here is the two jackets i have ordered for the police men,

Role on set

Media production is social collaboration which requires a division of labour and specialised skills in order to manufacture the right shots in getting the correct genre conventions and tone of your opening sequence.

The main five roles on set are:

- director ( responsible for organising and instructing the actors)

- camera operator ( in charge of filming the correct scenes and filming)

- editor ( edits the clips for the final cut)

- art director (sorting location,props,costume,makeup)

- producer(overseeing all aspects of the shoot, organising other members of production team and ensuring everything runs smoothly)

In our group of three for our final opening title sequence, tiggy is director, Freya is camera operator, i am the editor and the rest of the roles we are combing together so we all agree and is easy for all of us.

I a the editor because me and the group decided that they enjoyed and liked the way in which i edited the last practice shoot we did and easily can understand the way in which the editing workspace is.

Before the shoot i need to prepare and buy certain i teams that my group have decided that i need to get, we all need to gather together and make sure we have collected all our costumes, accessories and props.

We need to take our shot list with us as we would like to remember and not forget any key points.

My role is important because it is the final piece of the puzzle that we would need to do. Editing is very important because if the editing isn’t done well, it can ruin the concept and the rest of the clip because of timing.

Foley sound

Foley sounds is a unique and different sound technique used in the world of production that are “everyday sounds”. Prouducers create this sounds in post production in the studio in syncniry with the picture to enhance the quality of video. Most scenes are a use of combination of field recordings and foley effects.

Three types of foley effects:

1. Feet

2. Movement

3. Specifics

Foley sounds tend to make a scene more effective and relastic , the most realistic are the those that’s are natural and real so the audience doesn’t even notice them.

Here is a clip from Jurassic park and some foley sounds i would use over the the top to make the scene more relastic for the audience.

When the dinosaur is banging his head on the roof I was use my own foley sound with a book banging against a wall, because a book is hard surface and would represent the thump that the dinosaur does against the roof and create a loud and terrfying sound.

When the dinosaur deer are tapping on the ground i would use chalk on a chalk board to create a small section of the screeching of the nails on the floor, which creates suspense for the audience as everybody understands how awful the sound is.

When the pots and pans have been dropped on the floor i would use metal objects along with some musical objects to create the sound to last longer fo the suspense aspect and breaking of glass.

For this clip when he opens his mouth I would loudly go across a bumpy surface to create the voice of the dinosaur and the croaky noise like wooden panels.

Location 3 - set design

Today in our group we did a sketch of a birdseye view of what our scene is going to look like:

From birdseye view angle aswell as face on. So we get an idea on where it is going to be placed.

Costume

Today our group came together and worked on ideas for our costume.

I was in charge of the costume for the police officers, we came up with a plan to make sure all the actors are wearing a white shirt and black tie, black shoes and black trousers. X2

Aswell as this we looked up some ideas for the costume and thought the best way to show that it is a police officer is through a high vise coat:

This gives an idea to the audience that they are significant and have a sense of authority through the high vise jacket.

Futhermore to make sure it is as relastic as possible a hat, with the the words police on the top will define to the audience that it is police working on the scene.

I have chosen this costume as it looks as relastic as a police officer looks, and think it shows to the audience the level of authority through the hat and the high vise jacket.

Overall this costume gives the best idea to the audience that he is high of authority and police.

In addition, the rest of our group is working on costumes for the rest of the cast:

Freya is working on the outfit for the mum, this consists of jeans and a knitted jumper aswell as her high up.

Tiggy is working on the costume for forensics, which is a white overall, with a blue mask and black shoes. X2

We have chosen these costumes due to the detail that we need the audience to understand who and what their role is in the scene. For example police officers wearing high vise jackets and hats with their authority over the top to show what role they have.

Aswell as this the mum is wearing a low, pretty and colourful outfit to represent her way of living, through jumpers and jeans, lowkey and not a working mum. Shows the audience what kind of woman and mum she is.

Props

Today we came together as a group and decided on everything we need to buy or collect for our shoot. We wrote down a list of everything:

We highlighted which bits of the list each person in the group should get before our shoot. We spilt it out fairly so it was fair enough that we all had to buy stuff as a group.

For props we have a list

- handcuffs

- evidence bags

- childs bike

- gloves

- kids rucksack

- childs helmet

- bell

- fake blood (need to make before hand)

- cones

- blue shoe gloves

- bike lights

- camera flash

I decided that for my group i was going to buy, gloves, rucksack, childs helmet, bell.

I did some resarch and found that I could buy these various things on websites,

I found these box of blue gloves on amazon, as they come in a pack of 100 and during our scenes we need clips with blood and picking up objects. So we will need to use lots of sets of gloves to make sure we get the perfect shot.

Futhermore i found a bag for the child on the bike, that i think was the perfect match and signifies to the audience that he is a young boy.

I think this is the perfect bag as it hints to the audience that this is a kid without giving too much away.

On the other hand a childs helmet and bell is a prop that i have at home that we can use to add blood and ruin it, so we have the perfect prop.

If these props do not deliver or we are not happy with the props, making the most of props we have at home is going to be the solution, but in our group we decided that we are going to order props early rather then later so we don’t get lost or need to find backups and we would rather be prepared and ready.

We need these props so the final outcome is as relastic and perfect as we can possibly imagine, resarch we did a few weeks ago taught us what we would like and need to make sure it is relastic, like the small details that you wouldn’t notice but is important to make sure it is there.

Editing workshop 1

 Editing workshop 1:

During our workshop today we worked on editing skills for when we come to creating and editing together our work when shooting our opening title sequence.

A few weeks back in our camera workshop we made a some clips using the camera skills that we learnt in the workshop, today we learnt how to properly edit and cut the shots to make it a edited and clean clip using adobe premier pro.

We all got put into our groups for when we filmed the scenes, in pairs in front of a apple MacBook with the software on and our footage that we got uploaded.

Firstly we looked through all the footage we had created that day in our workshop, to see what we were dealing with, we then went on to use control button on the MacBook aswell as pressing C to “cut” parts of the bits we wanted to use and spilt our video into two separate videos.

The screen is divided so one section is the timeline and the other sections are the rushes and the preview window and the final window for how the screen is divided.

We cut the clips (our footage) into the sections we wanted to use for our video before we put our final video together and placed it into a separate folder.
The word “rushes” is a term used in editing to describe the raw and unedited footage.
The word “daily’s” is the term used for long footage which hasn’t been cut or stopped, a long and drawn out clip.

Once you have edited and shortened down the clip it is important to save the edited part. Using the keyboard Cltrl+C as it is a quick and easy shortcut so you don’t loose footage.

For a short cut key of arrow is by using right or left arrows to move frames, up arrow is used to move backwards to the start of the clip or the next edit on the clip.

To mark an in or out point you drag the play head onto and press the keyboard letter I for an in point. For an out point drags the play head and then press the keyboard letter O.

If your footage once edited is all crammed togotheer and small pressing + and - will help change the size of the footage we=hen editing so it is clearer for us to see what and where we are editing footage.

To quickly undo a stage in which you have mistakenly done, pressing Cltrl Z will undo the mistake and take your step back one step.

This is our final edited video that myself and Freya edited:

Location: issues

As our title sequence is based outside we could have many problems that could occur, as we are filming in late February and the weather could be unpredictable.

 - if raining i feel as though it would ruin our whole shoot as it would be difficult to film and ruin the lighting and aspect of this.

- transport - getting to cornhill would take one bus for all gear and actors aswell as cast and behind the scenes to get there. A 10 minute journey to cornhill is perfect.

- another issue that my occur is

Police officer / frensics = mike, Dave and Adam.

Mum- Susana, Nicky

Issues my occur is that on the day, actors and cast may not be able to make it on the day or a problem may happen so the use of two extras or another extra is there just in case of emergencies.

Location: Asking for permission

We WhatsApp the house master and owner of cornhill manor to ask permission to be able to use the house during our filming times as this was our first choice for location, so if complications don’t occur we will use this house as our location for our filming on our title sequence.

The housemaster of cornhill replied and said yes. So our first choice of cornhill as our filiming location is a go.

Location: where and backup

Me and my group had a discussion today on a location we wish to use. Our idea is based around a rich family in a big, extravagance house.

We came up with a free and easy location to get to which is corn hill manor (one of our boarding houses). The look of Cornhill is big and a expensive looking house so we feel as though this would be good idea as it easy to get to and the perfect looking house to which we imagined. It’s a 10 min drive from hurtwood house.

Down below is a screenshot of Google maps of where cornhill is. It has lots of field and grass around it aswell as a long driveway which is perfect for our final drive away for her in the car.

Futhermore we need a back up idea in case things don’t go to plan, we deicded on another boarding house which is one of hurtwood’s. Our backup idea is bee Webb as it also a well structured and rich house to also film if things don’t go to plan.

This is bee Webb which is a perfect backup house due to how close it is to school aswell as the look and garden for it.

Casting 1 - what we would like

Today me and my group had a discussion in who we would like for casting out title opening sequence.

For casting we decided going for adults was the best idea due to roles we have decided.

In our scene we need :

2 police officers who can play frensics aswell as this as there face wont be shown.

A mum who looks mid 30-40 so she looks like she had a child.

2 frensics

That’s all we need for our sequence from our cast.

Our group storyboard

 This is our group storyboard that we have created over our opening title sequences;

My storyboard section

My part of the storyboard is down below, i spent along time working on the detail into the drawings instead of the writing next to it, however i worked on the last 9 sections of the storyboard:

21-24:

25- 30

This is all 9 of my sections of storyboards, i am very proud and happy in which they have turned out and hope the audience can somewhat understand what the title opening sequence is going to be like.

Making of storyboard

When starting my storyboard, myself and tiggy and Freya decided to split our group into 10 storyboards each that will make up the final and finished storyboard.

My group decided i was going to do the last 10 frames of the storyboard. I decided drawing on my i pad would be the most creative and come out the best and most detailed as possible. I put a lot of time into making my story board so the viewers would understand the plot alot easier then in words. As i feel visually it is more important for the drawing to be key rather then the words so the audience can imagine and visualise it allot better.

I used the app word, and my apple pen and began drawing. Here is the process of which the making of my storyboard happened:

Above circled in red is the pens and drawing up i used to help illustrate my drawings on word.
