Opening clip research - sci-fi

 The martian - Opening clip research - sci-fi

Main actor = Matt Damon

Name = The Martian 2016

Distributor = 20th century fox

Money = Box office = 228.4m

Other actors = Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain

Director = Ridley Scott

The opening scene opens up with a wide shot to show the location and place of where this clip is filmed. The clip is shown in dirty, orange mountains with a sunset in the background. It looks like a quiet and peaceful location as there is nobody living there.The non-digetic soundtrack used over the top reprsents the peace and quiet which reflects back on to the wide shot angle used. Digetic dialouge is used over the close up and says 'nasa'. There is also a tracking shot of a space rocket and space car from this we understand the audience must understand that this is a sci-fi film due to nasa being a space administration company and the location of the film.

The main character gets introduced during this scene and the audience can tell that he is the main character due to the close up camera shots and the amount of dialouge that he has during this scene. One of the other charcters then calls him 'the capitian' which also answers the audiences theory about being the main character. There are more ac

tors introduced 'astronauts'  through this dialouge scene aswell as the change in location where two characters are working back in the ship./

An emergency button comes up with pleonstic sound to engage the audience. This alerts the audience that danger and excitment is about to arise with a extreme close up of the screen reading 'emergency'. There is a slow zoom in the womans face once she relaises something bad has happend. This creates emergency and worry in both the audience and the film.  The actors are scared and worried about the strom which creates tension for the audience as they are unaware of what is going to happen. This gets the audience engaged already as in the first few minutes of the film there is already a problem.

There are tracking shots following the astronaughts as they leave the ship and go out into the outside storm. Through the tracking shots you can feel there emotions and worries through through the shots aswell as the parallel sound following on to support the tension in this scene.

Overall i believe that this sc-fi film has the perfect msot enganging opening scene due to the opening shoot being based around the viewing of location. The clip of location engages the audience as its not a normal location it is out of space on mars. The art of an mergency happening in the first few minutes brings entertainment and engages the audience to watch the rest of the film aswell as being intrested in watching it.
